Chimney with Ten Symbols of Longevity in Relief
Jagyeongjeon is the dwelling of dowager queen, the eldest in the palace. They expressed their sincere wish for the long life of the dowager queen on the walls and chimneys around the building. The chimney of Jagyeongjeon does not look like a chimney, but a large wall of bricks for murals. Because there is a danger of fire if the chimney is too close to the building, it was designed to collect the smoke from the buildings around Jagyeongjeon through underground pathways. That is why this is such a large chimney. This chimney is not just large, but also a wonderful work of art. On the large rectangular shape at the center of the chimney are many symbols. They are ten auspicious things that signify a long life: the sun, clouds, mountains, stones, cranes, deer, turtles, elixir plants, pine trees, and water. Collectively, they are called sipjangsaeng. Around the sipjangsaeng are lotus flowers, ducks, and grapes. These are also auspicious and these patterns are called gilsangmun. On this beautiful canvas, there are large bricks with Haetae, dragons, crane, bats, and starfish, which stand out. They also express the desire to bring good fortune and longevity, and to expel evil.
