Taewonjeon Shrine

Taewonjeon Shrine
This is Taewonjeon, where a portrait of the king was kept. Also, when the king and queen passed away, their caskets were kept here for five months before going to the royal cemetery. When the king died, his eunuch would go up to the roof with the king’s robes in hand. The eunuch would shout toward the north, holding the drawstrings in his left hand and the waist portion in his right: “Please come back, please come back, please come back…” This was done so that the spirit of the king, which had left the body, would see the clothes and want to return to the palace. The king’s body would be laid out on a table with ice after being dressed in nine sets of new clothing. Officials and the royal family would conduct mourning rites every morning and evening, and they would weep loudly six times everyday. They also fasted for four days. After that, the king’s body was dressed in nineteen new sets of clothing. Five days after the king’s death, the king’s face was covered with a towel and the body was tied up after being dressed in ninety sets of new clothing. This was the point at which parting with the king forever was accepted by all. After that, the king’s body is placed inside the casket. The casket is one that was made the year that the king began his rule. The day that the king’s body enters the casket, the crown prince becomes king. Because it is conducted during the mourning period for the deceased king, the coronation ceremony is held amidst sadness and grief. The king’s portrait is created beforehand and then brought into this building. Because it is meant to represent the appearance of the king while he was alive as accurately as possible, the portrait contains every wrinkle and even pockmarks. If the deceased king’s portrait was damaged or destroyed by fire or a war, the new king and his officials wore mourning robes and wept out loud for three days. This was because the king’s portrait was seen not only as just a painting but as the king himself.
