There is a large lawn between Sujeongjeon and Yeongchumun. This was the site for Gwollaegaksa in the Joseon Dynasty. Gwollaegaksa refers to various government offices that were built inside the palace to assist the king.
In the Joseon Dynasty, there was a Heumgyeonggak for observing astronomy and time. In addition, there were an Okdang for discussions between the king and officials, Yakbang, which was a clinic for the royal family, and Naegak, the palace library.
After national sovereignty was lost to Japan, however, all these buildings were demolished, leaving just an empty site. During a recent excavation of Gyeongbokgung, relics were found for Seungjeongwon, which delivered the king's commands, Bincheong, which was a place for minister's meetings, and Seonjeongwancheong, which was used by the king's bodyguards. From these, we can imagine how these buildings must have been bustling with people.
