This monument commemorates the 40th year of the coronation of King Gojong (period of reign: 1863-1907), the 26th King of Joseon Dynasty, and his entry into Giroso at the age of 51, in 1902. The Memorial Monument for the 40th Year of King Gojong’s Coronation also commemorates the change of the country’s name to Daehanjeguk (the Korean Empire) and the use of the term ‘Emperor’ in 1897. The monument was designated as Historical Site No. 171 on July 18, 1969.
