Sojubang House

Sojubang House
“Onara onara ajoo ona…”
Do you remember this song? It was the theme song of Daejanggeum, the hit TV series.
One of the key sets of Daejanggeum was Sojubang. This is where they prepared royal tables and banquets. This building consists of Oesojubang, Naesojubang, and Saengmulbang. Naesojubang prepared the king’s tables, Oesojubang prepared banquets and tables for memorial ceremonies, and Saengmulbang, which was also called Saenggwabang, prepared refreshments and drinks. Sojubang was across Mansemun to the south of Jagyeongjeon, the queen’s dwelling.
Unfortunately, Sojubang no longer exists. But do not be disappointed. You will see Sojubang again soon, because the Cultural Heritage Administration commenced the restoration of Sojubang in 2011. The restoration of Sojubang is the first project of the second restoration of Gyeongbokgung, which will be carried out over six steps. The first step is the restoration of 56 buildings in the palace living area, including Sojubang. I hope Gyeongbokgung will regain its original shape as soon as possible. I would love to taste the royal cuisine made in Sojubang. Then we will be able to feel like the kings who ate those delicious dishes cooked by Janggeum, won’t we?
