Yeongchumun Gate

Yeongchumun Gate
This is Yeongchumun, the west gate of Gyeongbokgung. Officials who worked in government offices inside the palace usually entered through this gate. Early in the Joseon period, a prince’s uprising occurred inside Gyeongbokgung. This prince was resentful of his half-brother being designated as the crown prince and so he planned an uprising. The prince and his group held many secret meetings, and the members are said to have entered the palace through this gate. One king, known as a tyrant in Joseon history, loved to hold lavish banquets at Gyeonghoeru. In order to prevent people from coming in, he is said to have blocked up even this west gate. He would then entertain himself by sailing on boats in the pond.
