This quiet pond is called the Aeryeonji, which means loving the lotus. The pavilion which hangs half above the pond is also called the Aeryeonjeong. It used to be on the center of the pond like an island, but was moved later on to the side. It was built in 1692 by 19th king Sukjong. and He liked how the lotus “does not get affected by a dirty environment, but keeps itself clear and clean, like a gentleman should be.” King Sukjong selected Concubine Jang as queen amidst severe partisan fights. But he grew distanced with Jang, who stopped at nothing to become queen, and later misses Min. There was a woman who comforted him during such times, who was to become King Yeongjo’s future mother, Sookbin Choi. Back then, Sookbin Choi had been a court lady who did the lowliest tasks of the palace, but she was a loyal woman who awaited the return of Queen Min. The king was said to have walked the Aeryeonji with Sookbin Choi. One can imagine the king falling in love with her, who remained pure and virtuous even while in the midst of a dark environment.
