This is Seonjeongjeon Hall, the official office of the king. ‘Seonjeong’ means 'widely spreading politics and education' and the king would meet his ministers here to discuss political matters of the state, every morning. Seonjeongjeon is the only remaining blue-roofed building in Changdeokgung Palace. The blue roof tiles were made of Arabic blue dye and Chinese techniques were used to produce them. Two kings once wished to use blue tiles for palace roofs. The 10th king Yeonsangun wished to cover this building and Injeongjeon Hall with blue tiles but was ousted the next year, and the 15th king Gwanghaegun was criticized for being excessively lavish because of the blue tiles. Joseon was a Confucian nation which regarded modesty as virtue, and therefore even the palace was to be modestly decorated, doing without excessive ornaments.
