Hamnyeongjeon is a bedchamber of Deoksugung Palace and it was mainly used by Emperor Gojong of the Korean Empire. After Japan forced Gojong to abdicate the throne in 1907, he usually spent time in Hamnyeongjeon and he passed away at the age of 68 in 1919. Hamnyeongjeon is where the 1904 Deoksugung Palace Fire began. Hamnyeongjeon had Ondol Rooms (floor heating rooms) on both sides of Daecheongmaru (the main floor). The fire is believed to have started from these Ondol Rooms’ Gudle (Korean floor heater) when they were lit after being repaired. The fire burnt down most of the buildings of Deoksugung Palace. When the Emperor Gojong passed away in Hamnyeongjeon, the whole nation was saddened and it became one of the reasons of the 3.1 Movement to be spread nation-widely.
