This stele is one of the many stone slabs set up at the entrances to important state institutions such as Jongmyo Shrine and royal palaces in the Joseon Period, carrying an inscription asking visitors on horseback to dismount as an expression of respect. This particular marker is put up at a location leading to the entrance to Jongmyo Shrine established in the capital of Joseon. The marker is regarded as a tangible clue to the Confucian ideology encouraging people’s loyalty to the state and the filial duty of children to their parents.
