As its name suggests, Gongsindang (Hall of Meritorious Subjects) is a shrine housing the ancestral tablets of government officials of the Joseon Dynasty who rendered outstanding meritorious services to the dynasty. Their spirits tablets were enshrined here at the same time those of their rulers were enshrined in Jeongjeon Hall (Main Hall) after a traditional three-year mourning period. Just as the ancestral tablet of a king was stored in Yeongnyeongjeon Hall rather than Jeongjeon Hall due to lack of achievement, the meritorious officials in his government were similarly not entitled to be honored here, with their ancestral tablets housed in a private family shrine instead.
