This gate, is the main entrance to Jongmyo Shrine of the Joseon Dynasty. Traditionally, the gate remains shut at ordinary times but opens when an ancestral rite is held as a gesture of welcoming the royal ancestral spirits who, according to Korean traditional belief, descend from heaven on memorial day and enter the shrine through the gate for the rite.
